QBO lets you track subcontractors easily by having you check an optional box when you set them up as a vendor. But, when you select this option, you will be charged a monthly fee for every sub that is tracked like this. The fee is only a few dollars per month per sub, but this can start to add up very quickly. 20 Subs at $2.00 / sub will be an extra $40.00 / month added to your subscription. Then, you have to pay them to issue a 1099 at the end of the year. The workaround is very simple. It just requires you to add an account called “Subcontractor Payments” or something similar in order to run a report that will isolate these payments and sort them by subcontractor. Then you just use the data to prep and file the 1099s.
